The museum has mounted a range of her work---wood carvings, religious paintings and memory paintings---so you can see for yourself why she has been called The Black Grandma Moses. Helen LaFrance (November 2, 1919-November 22, 2020) was a self-taught Black American artist born in Western Kentucky who is best known for her captures of the disappearing lifestyle of the rural South.

LaFrance grew up on her family's farm under Jim Crow, the laws that demanded segregation and disadvantaged social, economic and educational conditions for African Americans in this country from 1876 to 1965. Her parents encouraged her artistry and they taught her at home when she had to work on the farm and couldn't go to the Black school. When her mother died, she left home to work different jobs, making enough money to buy art supplies. In 1986 she was able to paint full time. Helen was unusual in that she owned property, as did her father and grandfather, in a time when Black women in the South did not have that opportunity.

Helen passed away peacefully in her sleep at 101 years of age. She witnessed almost a century of life in the South, and it was that blend of personal experiences and artistic expression that made Helen LaFrance a unique and an important artist.

https://www.speedmuseum.org/exhibitions/kentucky-women-helen-lafrance
Just Lookinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04658658052108693090noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-993460420469861248.post-46646468244366634302020-11-30T18:32:00.003-08:002020-11-30T18:32:54.238-08:00CONTEMPORARY ARTIST HELEN LAFRANCE DIES AT AGE 101 (NOVEMBER 2, 1919-NOVEMBER 22, 2020)

It is with a heavy hard that I tell you that American artist Helen LaFrance passed away peacefully in her sleep November 22nd. Her obituary has been published in newspapers around the country. Last November 2019, Helen celebrated her 100th birthday with friends, family and patrons of her work who traveled from as far as Nashville and Memphis to visit with her. Guests visited two churches that Helen went to, and watched a screening of the 2019 award-winning documentary Helen LaFrance Memories about her life and her art.

Over the years, starting in 1995, I've come to know the kind and generous and talented Helen LaFrance. I've written about her in articles and books, Outsider Art of The South and Helen LaFrance Folk Art Memories, and I may have sold you one of her paintings. For those of you who don't know of her, by now you should have. She had the rare ability to connect with people emotionally through her art. She also made wood carvings, quilted and created a series of visionary paintings. Please read her obituary and learn a little more about her on this blog and on my website www.justlookingantiques.com.

Helen LaFrance was a Black contemporary American artist who witnessed a century of our country's life and who painted her truth and her memories. She was content whenever she was holding a paint brush which, as she'd told me many times, "when I'm not eating or sleeping, I'm painting." Sleep well, Helen.

https://www.inquirer.com/wires/ap/helen-lafrance-who-painted-rural-memories-dies-101-20201124.html

Just Lookinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04658658052108693090noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-993460420469861248.post-28727792474333107652020-04-20T10:42:00.002-07:002020-04-25T09:58:36.262-07:00HELEN LAWRENCE MEMORIES DOCUMENTARY CRUSHED IT AT PALM BEACH INTERNATIONAL & MINI MOVIE FESTIVAL DECEMBER 2019I am thrilled to report that the Three Palms Productions of the Helen LaFrance Memories documentary won three awards----for best documentary film, best feature film and best director Martin Scott! The film festival was held at the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach, Florida and the film was screened to a cheering audience. The film was in good company and it is pretty prestigious. Even Marilyn Monroe and Elvis showed up! I am honored to have appeared in the film and in such a great project that focuses not only on Helen's outsize talent but on her kindness, generosity and work ethic. The film would not have come about without the persistence of Bruce Shelton, who like myself has always wanted the world to know about Helen LaFrance.

The film followed the November celebration of Helen's 100th birthday in Mayfield, Kentucky, with a screening of the film and a party in her church where attendees came from far and wide to pay their respects. The Associated Press picked up the story, and it was featured in The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Philadelphia Inquirer, to name a few newspapers.

We are excited to see where the film will go next so the public can enjoy it.

CELEBRATED American artist HELEN LAFRANCE will turn 100 years of age November 2, 2019 in her hometown of Mayfield, Kentucky. Known best for her memory paintings which recall her life and times that span an entire century, she will be the subject of a new documentary film called Helen LaFrance: Memories. The film will be shown at 11 a.m. at her childhood church St. James A.M.E., where a mural she painted in 1947 is on view. The party moves on at 1 pm to Smith Presbyterian Church, 318 S. 5th Street.

LaFrance's work has been held in numerous museums and collected by American art connoisseurs including Oprah Winfrey, Gayle King, Bryant Gumbel and contemporary superstar Red Grooms. She has starred in several documentaries and received the prestigious Folk Heritage Award, one of the Governor's Awards in the Arts presented by the Kentucky Arts Council. She is featured in my anthology Outsider Art of the South and in my book Helen LaFrance Folk Art Memories.

Born in 1919, Helen has observed a century of American history, growing up in rural Graves County, KY under the laws of Jim Crow and segregation. She witnessed the Great Depression, the Great Migration, the Vietnam War and the Civil Rights Movement. Her particular vision and unique artistry have made her an authentic American voice and an important American artist.

Happy birthday, Helen! What a life you've led! We are blessed that you have shared it with us through the unforgettable gift of your art.

It's very exciting that the Franklin International Indie Film Festival in Franklin, Tennessee selected and showed "Helen LaFrance Memories" on August 18th among their 2019 winners. The film, co-produced by Three Palms Productions and Bruce Shelton. Bruce was on hand with the other winners for a Q & A following the films. Directed by Martin Scott Grissom and shot by Andrew Spence, it is a fresh look into the renowned self-taught African American artist. Helen was born November 2, 1919 in Mayfield, Kentucky. That's right, folks. She's 99 years old!
Here's an unedited clip from the documentary, which has been entered into a few other film festivals. And I'll keep you posted on further news developments about Helen.
American artist Helen LaFrance, shot by Andrew Spence and produced by
Martin Scott Grissom of Three Palms Productions, just before her 99th
birthday in 2018. I first met Helen in 1994 on her farm in rural western
Kentucky and wrote about her in a chapter of Outsider Art of the South and later in Helen LaFrance Folk Art Memories.

Helen
is best known for her memory paintings, recollections of her life laid
down on canvas and board, which strike an emotional chord with those who
view them. Helen also did wood carvings, quilted, and painted a series
of visionary paintings based on the Bible. She has been creating art
since she was a child and began painting full
time when she was in her forties using art supplies she purchased from
the grocery store.

In this film, Helen's artistry is
again recognized. But this documentary revisits Helen in a new light as a
modern woman as well.
I first met Helen in 1994 on her farm in rural western Kentucky and wrote about her in a chapter of Outsider Art of the South and later in Helen LaFrance Folk Art Memories.

Helen is best known for her memory paintings, recollections of her life laid down on canvas and board, which strike an emotional chord with those who view them. Helen also did wood carvings, quilted, and painted a series of visionary paintings based on the Bible. She has been creating art since she was a child and began painting full
time when she was in her forties using art supplies she purchased from
the grocery store.

In this film, Helen's artistry is again recognized. But this documentary revisits Helen in a new light as a modern woman as well.
Do yourself a favor and set aside about an hour to watch this documentary on the blues. I've heard it, seen it, and cherish my CDs from Junior Kimbrough and R.L. Burnside. As much of an authentic American form of expression as any work of art, this music is not everyone's cup of tea. But it is mine, and I hope you can appreciate it as much as I do. As anyone who really knows me knows, it's one of the keys to me.
This grape seed oil-based multipurpose balm is your beauty best friend -- it smoothes out the rough edges and offers relief for most skin situations, soothing, moisturizing, and protecting. Use on chapped lips, ragged cuticles, tough feet and rough hands. Also great for scratches, razor burn, sun burn, post-hair removal irritation, winter noses and most other skin discomfort. Try on eyelashes and eyebrows as nourishment and as a grooming aid. For shine, apply to any part of the face or body that needs a spotlight. In addition to grape seed oil, Bordeaux Balm is loaded with essential oils and natural ingredients, including coconut oil, aloe leaf extract, soybean oil and cotton seed oil. "Kristin: Skincare from the Vineyard" was founded by Kristin Moses Murray in 2006 when she could not find a grape seed oil-based multipurpose product to suit her beauty needs. A veteran of lifestyle and beauty public relations, Kristin worked long hours and traveled a great deal. Kristin saw that as she and her friends moved into the next phases of their careers, and some had children, time became a luxury. With each passing year, schedules were tighter - and beauty products and treatments were more necessary. Kristin thought there had to be a more streamlined method or a key ingredient that could target many needs and one that tapped into the magic and merits of grape seed oil. Grape seeds contain polyphenols and anti-oxidants, which help to nourish, smooth and moisturize the skin and the scent soothes the soul. Unable to find her dream product in the marketplace, Kristin decided to create a magic bullet herself with a multi-purpose product offering the benefits of grape seed oil, made for busy, beauty-conscious women. After nearly two years of research and development, Bordeaux Balm was born! Did I mention Kristin was my daughter? $12 plus $8 SHI to continental United States.

Just Lookinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04658658052108693090noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-993460420469861248.post-34249014954575587432014-11-25T07:09:00.001-08:002014-11-25T07:09:48.838-08:00HOLIDAY GIFT FOR THE COLLECTOR WHO HAS EVERYTHINGSuperb Victorian erotic ivory sword cane....Need I say more? Helander, an American artist, curator, art critic, writer and editor, and Moses, an art dealer who authored Outsider Art of the South and Helen LaFrance Folk Art Memories, discussed works of art in the current West Palm Beach gallery show, Detour. The artists featured in the show challenge and blur lines between traditional and non-traditional art making practices. Moses focused on the work of two African-American self-taught Southern artists, Helen LaFrance and Bessie Harvey, while Helander connected the dots between various artists in the show, all of whom are contemporary.Just Lookinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04658658052108693090noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-993460420469861248.post-87120555274797295452014-03-07T04:54:00.001-08:002014-03-07T04:54:28.933-08:00HELEN LAFRANCE SHOWCASED IN ARTHOUSE429 EXHIBIT IN WEST PALM BEACH THROUGH APRIL 6Last night Thursday March 6 was the anticipated opening of Detour >

The restorations were out of sight, and there were a few custom cars that were truly unusual. Wish I had a better picture of this one...a custom car built around a 1928 Rolls Royce Meteor engine on a 1920s Cadillac frame and suspension, with aluminum sheet metal panels and wood torpedo body.
Even saw car man Wayne Carini from Chasing Classic cars on the Velocity channel. A girl can dream!

This is a great new video about folk artist Helen LaFrance, which appears on youtube.com. She is being interviewed in her "studio" in the Kentucky nursing home where she resides. Remember, she is 93 years of age and she is still doing what she enjoys with her God-given talent. As she puts it so neatly, "When I'm not eating or sleeping, I'm painting." ( p. 1, Helen LaFrance Folk Art Memories, by Kathy Moses, with Bruce Shelton, foreword by Lee Kogan). LaFrance is a national treasure.
Try clicking on the link (below the first image) to "Nashville Arts Magazine" and, once you're there, click on the image for the current issue on the right. You'll find my article on local wood turner Brenda Stein. She and I spent a good four hours together when I interviewed her for the magazine, and we really hit it off. I rarely spend that much time with the subject of an article, but Brenda is a very interesting and talented woman and we found we shared many connections and had a lot of fun! She even had me suit up in protective gear and try my hand at the lathe, which was more than a little intimidating, even dangerous, until I got into it and heard her cheer me on, above the buzz of the machine, "That's awesome! You've taken your power! See what I mean?" It WAS awesome.
The exhibition, Helen LaFrance: Folk Art Memories, is a synthesis of her personal history, folk traditions and spiritual visions.

LaFrance is a renowned Southern folk artist who has been painting since she was five years old. Born in Graves County, Kentucky, her works reflect images from memories of rural farm-life. She received no formal art instruction and never attended high school. LaFrance practices a type of folk art called, “Memory Painting,” in which the artist records her autobiography in beautiful visual images.

For many years, LaFrance has painted memories of a lifestyle that is rapidly disappearing. Her paintings portray scenes of Southern farm images, such as farmers plowing in the field, church picnics, cotton fields, and river baptisms.

A biography of LaFrance is featured in a book with the same title as the exhibit, “Helen LaFrance: Folk Art Memories,” written by Kathy Moses with Bruce Shelton. Her paintings have been purchased by such celebrity collectors as Oprah Winfrey and Bryant Gumbel. Her work is also in the permanent collection of the Kentucky Folk Art Center and The Owensboro Museum of Fine Art.

Of her art, LaFrance says with modesty: “I just do what I do. I thought if I kept doing it, one day I’d do something worthwhile.”

The exhibition traces the prolific and profound journey of this noted Southern folk artist. There is no admission charge to visit the exhibit, which will be on view through August 12.

Above: Farm yard, oil on canvas, nda.
